Widget Beer Ratings
[Confirmed - 25th February 1999]
Rank | Beer | Rating (x/10) | Judge's Comments |
1 | Tetley Export | 8.46 | Full cream lasting head, like Cabot's Danish oil or the mahogany ship in colour. Sharpish and crisp. Old gold deep and dark, brooding, sultry, beeswax and antique wood. A Yarra River touch or mixed yellowbox honey. |
2 | Kilkenny | 8.016 | Dark and rich looking with a srong bitter iron taste too, something like a galvanised roof. More your Tidal River than your Yarra River. A robust and creamy head. Mary-Anne, not Ginger, creamy, robust, maltish, unpretentious. |
3 | Boddington | 8.01 | Reminscent of goldent treacle with a hint of mystery, refreshing and smooth with a subtle bite like a fine brie cheese. Conjuring up thoughts of a traditional pub with an open fire. Yeasty and zesty, but not cluttered. |
4 | Double Diamond | 7.88 | A rich barley colour with depth, refreshing with the taste of lightly roasted hops or a sweet barley sugar tang. |
5 | Calders | 7.8 | Extremely subtle taste with a smooth rich honey nose and lightly golden in colour |
6 | Caffrey | 6.53 | This one screams for attention, but tries too hard. More like 'Timbercoat', the subtle taste of gunmetal or filings and somehow tinny at the same time. |
*About the Winner - Tetley Export comes from England
**Jugdges Note: The judges were not impressed with some of these widget beers, and the closeness in scores reflects a sameness in taste and texture that may be the result of this new process. There was an extreme lack of 'nose' in all beers sampled.
